The actual bolting and clamping all the bits of your engine together is a very often overlooked subject, however, the following parts are critical to the success of your project: rod bolts, head studs, & main studs. These components are really a bit like cooking utensils, they appear simple enough and yet to consistently obtain good results they take a little work to get the best from them! ARP stainless steel components are made from a special stainless which is processed by hot and cold working which gives a material with a tensile strength of 170,000 PSI, which, when you consider that a grade 8 bolt is at best only 140,000 PSI you can see how this is an ideal spec. for things like manifold studs and bolts which also have a heat problem to contend with, an ideal environment for stainless steel. Head studs and some rod bolts are made
from a material known as 8740, this is a very high grade material, and has a
tensile strength of 190,000 PSI ARP2000 rod bolt material can usually be identified by it having a silver finish, these have a tensile strength of 220,000 PSI |
