APT Valve Train for Triumph Spitfire, TR6, GT6, MG Midget 1500

The simplex (single) camshaft drive on late model 1300 and 1500cc Triumph engines can be changed over to a duplex (double) chain drive by using Kent's adjustable steel timing gear set part number VCS-07. This is a really neat installation which also gives the ability to dial in the cam timing easily and quickly, not to mention accurately. The stock timing cover can still be used.

Stock rocker ratio is 1.5 according to factory specifications, but if you actually measure it on the engine with a dial indicator you will find that its less, sometimes only 1.4:1
APT roller rockers, made by Titan, are a true 1.65 ratio and so give a good increase in lift and valve acceleration over the stock rockers.
Also, the pad on the end of a stock rocker is ground with a radius, so that as much as possible it rolls on the valve stem, rather than dragging and creating side loads.
This principal only works with a stock lift cam. When cam lift is increased, which we have to do if we want more performance, side loadings on the stem go up considerably.
Roller rockers are much more suitable and should be considered. The extra initial expense will soon more than pay for itself, not to mention the extra performance.
Triumph engines like short duration and reasonable lift, and with the cam lobe center configured correctly, as the APT cams are, substantial performance increase can be obtained over a wide power band and with good long term reliability.
