A-Series Camshafts

APT is a leader in camshaft technology.  We grind all of our own cams in our own shop using the latest computer generated designs.

APT reground cams are plasma gas-nitrided for improved surface hardness

Dyno testing, together with computer integrated flow bench, and camshaft development software has allowed us to combine torque, horsepower, and valve train stability with long life into each design.

The APT 'Scatter Pattern' cam concept is accepted  as giving the best results available for the longer duration cams in Siamese port engines. You will find them installed in race cars around the world.

Scatter Pattern and Megadyn are just two of the cam programs developed in our shop and now licensed to Kent Cams.

There are some imitations, but these are bad imitations - BEWARE!

All APT "BK" cams are ground on new steel billets with pressure fed oiling to
both the distributor drive gear, and pressure oiling to each lobe.

All APT cams are available on steel blanks, including VP8C, SP8, stock regrinds.

SPVP4-BK Vintage Race Cam - new steel blank - Scatter Pattern - Slot Dr.

SPVP4 - without a doubt the most popular cam for vintage and historic racing. Best with 1.5 ratio rockers, but will also work with standard ratio, nice to fit offset bushes if you can.   Nominal seat timing (advertised duration) 296 degrees.

SPVP5 - ultimate race cam, really only works well with 1.5-1.7 ratio rockers, and is normally only recommended for 1275 and bigger. Nominal (advertised) seat duration 310 degrees

Always use new chilled iron heat treated (Rockwell C 60+) lifters #CF-04
these lifters are coated with manganese phosphate to aid break in.

About.....

Cam part numbers that end in 'N' are all Plasma Nitride Hardened.
All 'Pin' drive cams are 3/8" wide lobe width, unless a good regrindable core is sent for exchange
Star drive cams have 1/2" lobe width, and can be used in a small bore engine that originally used a pin drive cam by using oil pump spacer plate # OPS and an extra gasket #OPG.
Inline engines may need to have the backplate machined to fit the larger 1275 pump cover, or epoxy the pump cover onto the other side of the engine back plate.
 
A+ slot drive type drive cams can be used in any 1275 engine in place of a star type drive. Use oil pump #   OPA+ 
Part numbers for APT cams end in either "BK" (for steel blank) or "MN" (for A+ both are slot drive)  Mini Cooper MG Midget 
Do you have a good cam core (star or pin drive) that could be reground?
APT will buy your cam for $20 and pay UPS shipping within the US
Cams with worn lobes, or that have been reground are not usable.
Damaged threads or journals and rust would also render them unusable. The day is coming when it will be cams on new cores only
